Organizing the Chaos

Toy Storage Solutions

One of the biggest challenges for parents is managing the clutter that comes with toys. In our previous house, our living room doubled as a toy room and it was always an absolute mess. We had to come up with an idea to cut down on the toys that were out in plain view, so we decided that we were going to have to get creative and use a combination of the following:

  • Use Clear Bins: Clear storage bins allow kids to see their toys easily, making clean-up a breeze. Label each bin with pictures or words to help younger children identify where things belong.

  • Under-Bed Storage: Utilize the space under beds for storing toys. Rolling bins or flat boxes can slide right under, keeping toys out of sight but easily accessible.

  • Repurpose Furniture: Consider using furniture that doubles as storage. Ottomans with hidden compartments or benches with storage can keep toys organized while serving a functional purpose. I still use this method with my teenage daughter (she has an exorbitant amount of makeup, so much that she could rival a Sephora store).

Create a Toy Rotation System

When my kids were younger, I had implemented a toy rotation system. This kept toys feeling fresh and new. They sometimes even forgot about the toy until it came back into rotation. It was like getting gifts for no reason, except that it was stuff they already owned! Here’s how it works:

  1. Sort Toys: Divide toys into categories (e.g., building blocks, dolls, puzzles).

  2. Select a Few: Choose a few toys from each category to keep out for playtime.

  3. Store the Rest: Place the remaining toys in storage bins.

  4. Rotate Regularly: Every few weeks, swap out the toys. This keeps playtime fresh and exciting!

Meal Time Made Easy

Quick and Healthy Snacks

As a busy mom, preparing healthy snacks can sometimes feel like a chore. Here are some quick ideas that kids will love:

  • Fruit Kabobs: Thread pieces of fruit onto skewers for a fun and colorful snack. Kids enjoy the hands-on experience, and it’s a great way to get them to eat more fruit.

  • Yogurt Parfaits: Layer yogurt with granola and berries in a cup. It’s a nutritious snack that feels like a treat. These are great to make a head of time, just keep the granola separate or it will get a little soggy.

  • Veggie Dippers: Cut up carrots, cucumbers, and bell peppers and serve them with hummus or ranch dressing. This encourages healthy eating habits while being fun to eat. This is the only way my kids will eat their veggies willingly, I just put it out on the table and they munch away!

Meal Prep Hacks

Between work, extracurriculars, and homework, weeknights are usually tight for time. To save the dinner time stress, consider these meal prep hacks:

  • Batch Cooking: Prepare large quantities of meals and freeze portions for later. Soups, stews, and casseroles freeze well and can be reheated quickly.

  • Pre-Chopped Ingredients: Spend some time on the weekend chopping vegetables and storing them in the fridge. This makes it easy to throw together a quick stir-fry or salad during the week.

  • Use a Slow Cooker or Instant Pot: Set it and forget it! Slow cookers are perfect for busy days. Just add your ingredients in the morning, and you’ll have a delicious meal waiting for you at dinner time. Instant Pots make meals quickly. Perfect for the nights when you forgot to take the chicken out of the freezer.

  • Use a Meal Planning Chart and Grocery List: These help with dinner time and grocery shopping organization. Download your free copy of my Meal Planner here.

Managing Screen Time

Set Clear Boundaries

In today’s digital age, managing screen time can be difficult. It seems like everything is centered around using the internet or some type of device. Kids are using technology increasingly in schools, and often require to use it for homework as well. Beyond that, online games are popular with kids and teens, and it's a fun way for them to connect with their friends when they are separated. However, too much screentime can be harmful and addicting to kids, and they often need reminders to unplug and take a break. Here are some tips to help you set boundaries:

  • Create a Schedule: Designate specific times for screen use. For example, allow an hour of screen time after homework is completed.

  • Encourage Alternatives: Promote activities that don’t involve screens, such as reading, playing outside, or doing crafts. This helps balance screen time with other enriching activities.

Use Parental Controls

Take advantage of parental control features on devices to help manage what your kids can access. This can provide peace of mind while allowing them to enjoy their favorite shows and games.

Creative Play Ideas

DIY Craft Projects

Crafting can be a fantastic way to keep kids entertained while also encouraging creativity. Here are a few easy DIY projects:

  • Nature Collages: Go on a nature walk and collect leaves, flowers, and twigs. Use these materials to create beautiful collages.

  • Homemade Playdough: Make your own playdough using flour, salt, water, and food coloring. It’s easy to make and provides hours of fun.

  • Recycled Art: Use empty boxes, bottles, and other recyclables to create art projects. This teaches kids about recycling while sparking their imagination. My kids seem to get more enjoyment out of playing with boxes than they do their actual toys some days.

Indoor Treasure Hunt

On inclimate weather days, set up an indoor treasure hunt. Create a simple map or write clues leading to hidden treasures around the house. This keeps kids active and engaged while having fun. If that's too much (because let's be honest, that takes a lot of planning, and sometimes I'm too tired or overwhelmed after the 5th snow day in 2 weeks), get the kids to do their own alphabet treasure hunt. Have them find something in the house that starts with each letter of the alphabet. Then instead of having them bring it to you, have them sketch a picture of it. That way everything stays in it's place and the kids are busy drawing all of the items. (Genius, I know)

Simplifying Bedtime Routines

Create a Consistent Routine

A consistent bedtime routine can help children wind down and prepare for sleep. Here’s a simple structure you can follow:

  1. Bath Time: A warm bath can be relaxing and signal that it’s time to wind down.

  2. Story Time: Reading a book together can be a calming way to end the day.

  3. Set a Bedtime: Establish a specific bedtime and stick to it. Consistency helps children feel secure and understand what to expect.

Use Sleep Aids

Consider using sleep aids like white noise machines or blackout curtains to create a calming sleep environment. These tools can help children fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. (Sorry Grandma, but your advice of giving a kid a hot toddy will probably be frowned upon.)

Encouraging Independence

Age-Appropriate Chores

Teaching kids to take on age-appropriate chores can foster independence and responsibility. Here are some ideas based on age:

  • Toddlers: Simple tasks like putting away toys or wiping spills can be great starting points.

  • Preschoolers: Encourage them to help with setting the table or sorting laundry.

  • School-Aged Kids: Assign more complex chores like making their beds or helping with meal prep.

Let Them Make Choices

Allowing children to make choices can boost their confidence. Whether it’s picking out their clothes or choosing a snack, giving them options helps them feel empowered. Personally, I give a total of 2 choices to limit the amount of indecision.
